How to conduct a SEARCH How to SUBMIT or EDIT a STUDY
How to use this web site: Spanish version (Instrucciones para el acceso a la biblioteca)
SEARCH
Use the site's main "SEARCH" option for quick searches. "SEARCH" matches all words when retrieving information. User should enter a keyword, or words grouped together as one search term. Examples of some words that might be grouped together as one search term include: triple lumen catheter, pediatric oncology, burn specialty teams, public health nurses, etc.
"SEARCH" does not require any special formatting or grouping of words within quotes, parentheses, or the use of Boolean operators (AND, OR, NEAR, etc.).
The "SEARCH RESULTS" page retrieves the "Title/Abstract" and "Primary Investigator" and links to the research details.
SEARCH ABSTRACTS
Use the "SEARCH ABSTRACTS" tab as an "ADVANCED SEARCH" to retrieve abstracts from either a conference or an individual's submitted study.
- Search CONFERENCE Abstracts
Users may search conference abstracts several ways on the Advanced Search page. By selecting the “Conference Abstracts” option, users may search nursing conference proceedings in the library by any or all of the following options:
Title – by entering the title of the conference abstract using exact word(s) or any word(s) used in the title
Primary Investigator Name or Co-Investigator Name
Word(s)
Conference Organization – Select a specific organization from the pull-down menu
Conference Year - Enter year the conference was held or by entering specific years like “1995 to 1997” to indicate a range of years.
Additional definitions for the terms used on the "Advanced Search - Conference Abstracts" page are available on the Help pages.
Users may search abstracts by Study, Methodology, Quantitative Research, and Qualitative Research using search terms provided. Definitions of search terms used may be found here: links to definitions
Additional Search How-To's
VHINL's advanced search engine can search for a word or phrase, prefix of a word or phrase, words near another word, words that are generated from other words and words with a higher designated weight.
Searching for a Word or Phrase To search for a word or phrase, enter the word or phrase for which you wish to search. You can also enter search terms containing the words:
These special terms allow for more specific searching. For example, searching for: pediatric AND oncology will return results that feature both the word pediatric and the word oncology.
Searching for a phrase is no different. For example, searching for: pediatric AND NOT oncology centers will return results that feature the word pediatric, but not the phrase "oncology centers".
Searching for the previx of a word or phrase To search for the prefix of a word or phrase, input the prefix, followed by the * character. For example, searching for: onco* will return results containing all words that begin with "onco", such as “oncology”.
If searching for a phrase, each word in the phrase will be treated as a separate prefix. For example, searching for: local wound * will return results including "local wound-site treatment", "locally wounded", etc.
Searching for a word near another word
By using the word NEAR in your search, you can search for a word that is near another word. For example: pediatric NEAR medicine NEAR treatment
Searching for a generational term
You can perform an Inflectional search, which specifies that the plural and singular, as well as the gender and neutral forms of nouns, verbs, and adjectives should be matched. The various tenses of verbs should be matched as well. This can be accomplished by using
FORMSOF (INFLECTIONAL, [the search word or phrase]) For example, to search for any form of the word "nurse": FORMSOF (INFLECTIONAL, nurse)
To perform an Inflectional search for a phrase, you must include the entire search phrase in double-quotes. For example, to search for any form of the phrase "nurse advocacy": FORMSOF (INFLECTIONAL, "nurse advocacy")
Performing a weighted search To give words different weights within your search, use the syntax: ISABOUT([the search word or phrase] weight ([the weight of the term]))
Note that the weight entered must be less than 1. For example, to search for the word "nurse" with more weight than the phrase "pediatric oncology", search for:
ISABOUT (nurse weight (.8), "pediatric oncology" weight (.4)) Note that any phrases must be enclosed in double-quotes.
