[Leadership Session Presentation] Background: In an effort to empower and provide nurses control over their practice, a move to shared governance will be initiated at a Midwest Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC). This venture will involve change from the hierarchical form of administrative structure to a Counsilor model that promotes shared authority, responsibility, accountability and fosters collaboration in decisions that impact patient care, the practice environment and group governance. Purpose: This study seeks to explore the readiness for the implementation of shared governance at a Midwest VAMC. Methods:  This qualitative replication study will use a set of eight questions designed to elicit perceptions of readiness for shared governance within focus groups comprised of registered nurses who represent the overall demographic of the VAMC.Results: The results will be analyzed using observer impression and member check, in which the finding will be disseminated to the participants in order to validate the results. The findings will be available for dissemination in August 2009.
