[Special invitation presentation] The non-compliance of a chronic patient is the most important single factor affecting the outcomes of care and the costs arising from it. The successful education of chronic patients can be examined in view of their compliance, which is here defined as the patient?s active, responsible self-care in collaboration with the nursing staff, as required by his/her care (Kyngäs et. al. 2000). Through patient-centred education it is possible to promote compliance. The purpose of this doctoral thesis is to examine the outcomes of patient education in the case of chronic obstructive pulmonary patients and of the training intervention intended for the hospital staff with regard to patient education. The aim is to improve the effectiveness of patient education and to investigate the role of training in changing practices in hospital. The research is carried out in the form of intervention research based on repetition measurements. The outcomes variables are gathered up both the patients and the hospital staff. The topics of the patient education training intervention to be arranged to the hospital staff during a period of 6 months are connected with evidence-based disease management and education-theoretical information. Pedagogically compatible methods will be used with an intervention. The research material will be collected using questionnaires and analysed through descriptive, comparative and explanatory statistical methods. The research will provide information on the implementation and effectiveness of patient education for chronic patients, development of care, arranging training intervention, the effects of such intervention, and factors connected with these. Patient compliance has a major impact on the well-being of the individual, outcomes of care and the costs of health care. It is also connected with the quality and efficiency of the health care system. The evaluation of patient education and of the productivity of developing evidence-based care serves to support the related decision-making.
