[Evidence-based presentation] Globally, the nursing profession continues to grapple with a staffing shortage; therefore effective leadership is vital to the longevity of the profession. It is predicted that the entry of generation (Y) and the departure of the baby-boomers will result in a major skill shortage across all industries. The nursing profession will be competing to attract skilled workers and future health care leaders must be prepared.  Recruitment, and more importantly retention, will move to forefront. Employees don?t leave their jobs they leave their bosses, and as a result a new leadership paradigm has emerged.  Leadership development has been transformed into a science. Future leaders must be people-centered; achievement oriented; and possess a degree of emotional intelligence.  In addition to the bottom-line, a leader's success will be determined by how effectively they develop and support their staff?s professional growth. Helping employees get to the next level will become a major responsibility of the leader. Future leaders must also possess the skills and knowledge necessary to create a cohesive and collaborative work environment where both organizational and employee goals are the focus. The lack of effective leadership can be detrimental to the quality of the work environment and ultimately to the entire organization. Effective leadership will result in increased employee and customer satisfaction, customer loyalty and profits.  The attributes of a healthy work environment and the importance of understanding personality styles and generational differences will be discussed during this presentation, along with several activities and strategies to increase employee commitment.
