Nurse educators have an obligation to promote the use of global discussions of current nursing practice and prepare future health care givers to recognize how the internet and online discussions among their peers can expand problem-solving abilities and promote the use of existing nursing standards. The use of technology has had a significant impact on nurse educators. This presentation explores several strategies used to promote on-line learning activities for senior students. Senior BSN and masters students in northern California have used on-line discussion forums to critique complex case studies. Over the past several years, these faculty further developed activities using various nursing sub-specialty groups’ position statements for validation of nursing practice activities. Faculty will share their perceptions of this format, basing their discussion on the relationship of these online exercises to teaching pedagogies. As a result of these forums, students were assisted in applying theoretical content and learning with technology. Additionally, opportunities for using such online peer exchanges can become an exemplar for future global peer nurse networking. As the Internet and technology increasingly become more significant in both nurses’ and society’s daily lives, it becomes imperative for nurse educators to explore various teaching/learning methods and to reflect on their application of these with other nurses. By assessing and evaluating on-line activities such as these, nurse educators will come closer to providing more meaningful online learning experiences, using educationally sound principles. Technology can be used to promote nursing practice and to provide resources for future healthcare providers.
