This session will focus on the opportunities for advanced practice nurses to provide leadership for community initiatives and public health policy change. Topics will be illustrated by the presenter's own experience in a leadership role with the Allen County (IN) Suicide Prevention Council, the Indiana State Suicide Prevention Coalition, The Northeast Indiana Mental Health Coordinating Council, and the Allen County Mass Disaster Psychological Response Team. Skills critical to leading community health initiatives will be identified. Specific discussion will include: educating community groups about the role of the advanced practice nurse; providing the structure for successful community collaborations; working with competing healthcare groups; funding; working with the media; and the politics related to community health policy and change.
