There is some evidence that procedures used in the maternity services during the 1990’s are strongly defined by the health care system although childbirth and expectations during pregnancy are very individual and strongly experienced by each mother. As in Finland nearly all pregnant women use maternity services, it is important to produce critical information from women's own point of view. The purpose of this study is to gain knowledge of the mother’s decision making and needs regarding their care in maternity clinics. A random sample of 3000 women was drawn. An anonymous questionnaire was mailed in January 2003 to the women. They will return questionnaires by February 15th 2003. Data analysis include statistical methods. The questionnaire was developed on the basis of existing research studies concerning background information, participation in decision making and the needs and experiences in care. In this paper we will present our results. The results will be used both in clinical practice as well as in education for nurses, midwives and public health nurses.
