The "purpose" of this research was to 1) develop information about residential long-term care for the elderly for healthcare providers and the general public and to 2) use the Internet to disseminate the information. The "objectives" were: (1) To develop web site General Public user information about the population, cues that the individual cannot live alone safely, selection of living arrangements for the elderly person, assisting the elderly person living in a facility, visiting the elderly person living in a facility, and legal considerations. (2) To develop healthcare provider information in the form of findings from the review of selected research studies and a secondary analysis of data published by HCFA (Minimum Data Set (MDS) and Online Survey, Certification, and Reporting (OSCAR). Available at: http://www.medicare.gov. (3) To develop a web site for dissemination of the information. The number of persons over the age of 80 is increasing and is predicted to continue to increase. Elderly Persons often require assistance with activities of daily living. Advanced age is accompanied with various forms of Dementia and/or diminishing cognitive skills and physical skills. A "Checklist" of items to consider when selecting a residential long-term care facility was developed. The content for the web site presently includes the topics of "Population," "Factors to Consider When Selecting a Residential Long Term Care Facility," "Federal/State Regulations," "Legal Issues," and "Useful Web Sites." "Research Findings" from selected nursing research studies and "Data From the MDS and OSCAR" were also included. A Counter was placed on the web site to monitor "hits."
