The components of a professional development model designed to empower school nurses to become leaders in school health services will be presented. The model was implemented in a five-day professional development institute that included clinical and leadership components, especially coalition building. Coalition building is an important tool to enhance the influence of the school nurse in improving the health of individuals, families, and communities. The institute was funded by community healthcare partners. School nures or nursing educators with expertise in the school nurse specialty could replicate this model in their own regions.
