Title:
The Effect of Critical Care Education on the Novice Nurse
Abstract:
The Effect of Critical Care Education on the Novice Nurse
Conference Sponsor:Sigma Theta Tau International
Conference Year:2007
Author:Boes, Laurie A., MSN
P.I. Institution Name:SouthCrest Hospital
Title:Director ICU
[Special invitation presentation] The ANA stated in 1985, it is each nurse?s responsibility to maintain competency by keeping his or her knowledge and skill levels current. As the most experienced member of ICU, the Director provides education and clinical focus for new employees. An eight week course based on Benner?s Novice to Expert theory was created to educate new graduates and experienced nurses without ICU experience. The course contained didactic, hands-on, and clinical mentoring techniques. Students successfully completed the course with the ability to provide beginning critical care. Limitations were the lack of an ICU classroom, difficulties acquiring audiovisual equipment, and lack of a critical care educator. Recommendations are to continue the orientation course for novice nurses and provide a full-time position for an ICU educator.
