Conference Year:2005
Author:Freda, Linda, MSN, CHPN
P.I. Institution Name:Hospice of the Comforter
Last year we, in the State of Florida, and in our country have witnessed an atrocity. In the wake of judicial ignorance, State House speaker Johnnie Byrd introduced a bill which imposes pain and suffering on our helpless Florida citizens. Governor Bush contributed to making a spectacle of Terri Schiavo and her family. Terri is a 39 year old woman who has been proven to be brain dead after having suffered a cardiac arrest over 13 years ago. She has been kept alive by the use of artificial nutrition and hydration provided by a feeding tube. Issues of Terri's family discern and disagreement has been pawned to provide political and personal gains for attorneys and lawmakers. Attorneys argued that ?by the rules of war and the Geneva convention to discontinue artificial nutrition and hydration would be to cause death by starvation and is harshly condemned and punishable in an international court?. They went on to describe that discontinuing of tube feedings was barbaric and inhumane. They said that Terri Shaiave was sentenced to a slow and painful death. What they fail to know or have experienced is that what a terminal patient is experiencing is just the opposite.
