The Health Learning Center (HLC) at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois is a premier, nationally recognized consumer health library. Resources in the library number in the thousands from books, journals, e-journals, audiovisuals, and internet links to models, exhibits, and classes. Since its inception, the HLC has modeled a unique staff mix of librarian, nurse educators, health educators, and a diverse mix of persons who serve in a voluntary capacity. Volunteers have served the HLC since its opening in the spring of 1999. The HLC volunteer profile includes a multitude of ages, backgrounds, professions, ethnicity, and gender. The program includes a comprehensive orientation, a preceptor-based training and ongoing education and development. Volunteers not only service the HLC's clients but also provide administrative and program support. This diverse mix of volunteers in coordination with the paid HLC staff proves to create a culture of personalized service and excellence.
