This study was conducted to identify the effects of a prepared childbirth education on knowledge and participation of delivery in spouse of primiparas. The subjects were 126 spouses, consisting of experimental group of 74 educated for prepared childbirth for 10 hours(2 hours a week for 5 weeks)at C hospital in Seoul, Korea from Sept.20 to Oct.2,2002 and control group of 52. Education program was composed of Lamaze, physiology of pregnancy, care for neonates, before and after childbirth exercise and family planning. This study was measured by using the 41-item measurement instrument for knowledge of childbirth developed by Kang(1981)and the 23-item measurement instrument for participation of delivery developed by the researcher on the basis of its clinical experiences. The data were analyzed by using SPSS WIN-10.0 program. The results are as follows:1)There was no significant difference between experimental group and control group in homogeneity about general characteristics of spouse of primiparas. 2)The first hypothesis"The level of knowledge of childbirth in experimental group provided with prepared childbirth education would be higher than that in control group." was statistically supported(t=17.92, p=.000). 3) The second hypothesis"The level of participation of delivery in experimental group provided with prepared childbirth education would be higher than that in control group." was statistically supported(t=28.87, p=.000). 4) The third hypothesis "There would be a correlation between the level of knowledge and the level of participation in experimental group provided with prepared childbirth education." showed high positive correlation(r=.810, p=.000). In conclusion, the above results have informed us that the increase of knowledge through prepared childbirth education in spouse of primiparas has high correlation with the level of participation that can help physical and moral support for primiparas at delivery. Reorganization of education program and education site that are eligible for Korean culture and emotion and training of expert educator are suggested.
