At a regional psychiatric facility nurses’ voices were silenced by cutbacks, restructuring and a toxic work environment. A newly established Chief of Nursing Practice position in the Spring of 2000 created an opportunity for visionary leadership. The key to success was creating a vision, a foundation upon which to build our knowledge and strength and an audible nursing voice. Our vision: to become an internationally recognized Centre of Excellence for Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing which has at its core committed, person-centred, professional practice and scholarship, was created collaboratively. It has guided our journey towards excellence. For example, as one of eighteen countries and the first North American site, we implemented the research-based © Tidal Model of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing. A nurse manager for recruitment and retention was established as were off-shift managers, thoughtfully named Professional Practice Leaders. Drawing on the power of narrative nursing knowledge to re-kindle a sense of autonomy and trust, nurses collaborated in creating the newsletter Reflections, and established story-telling circles. A unique Practice Setting Consultation Program (PSCP), developed to help nurses and agencies identify and cultivate characteristics in their workplace that support quality professional practice was introduced. The nurses work in a variety of programs with diverse populations, yet an enthusiastic 94% of nurses responded to a quality of work-life survey and identified common concerns. Two innovations demonstrate visionary leadership. The ©Tidal Model created the opportunity for nurses to provide leadership through exemplary practice. In the survey, nurses identified leadership opportunities as a priority and led the way in developing and implementing leadership action plans. This presentation will demonstrate innovative yet practical responses to leadership challenges in turbulent times. Leaders, practitioners, educators, managers, policy makers and researchers will be interested in visionary leadership in psychiatric and mental health environments.
