Purpose: Expose guidance counselors to the array of career opportunities within the profession of nursing through personal conversation at their annual state convention. Strategy: The Pennsylvania Higher Education Nursing Schools Association (PHENSA) began an intense effort to inform guidance counselors regarding nursing as a career opportunity in the spring of 1999 and have continued this effort for two subsequent years. Process: The project began by sponsoring a breakfast at the annual convention in 1999. Each participant received a bag with the slogan “Thank you for supporting Baccalaureate Education", which contained information on over 40 Bachelor of Science nursing programs in the state of Pennsylvania. While at the convention eight nurses sat and ate with the counselors and discussed the opportunities for nursing and the demand for nurses in the region. Personal contacts with the counselors found that most did not have any idea of the opportunities for nurses and still considered nursing a “handmaiden to physicians, and only in the hospitals”. The nurses educated the counselors and decided to continue this effort annually as one means to increase the potential poll of students choosing nursing as an area of interest in college. In the spring 2001, a more concerted effort was made to talk with the counselors at the convention by adding two additional components to our efforts. The spring meeting of PHENSA was held at the same location and time of the guidance counselors meeting. All the deans and chairs of the BS Nursing programs were invited to stay after the PHENSA meeting and have dinner with the guidance counselors. Those who did found that the counselors were receptive to hearing about nursing opportunities. Results: The guidance counselors indicated that they need materials to hand out to students of all ages. Currently there is little appropriate information particularly for the middle-aged student. Also materials that are culturally sensitive are needed. We have offered the Pro-Nurse coloring sheets, the NSNA video, and several handouts. What are needed are packaged materials appropriate for all age levels.
