Scientifically, poetry is a bridge between the right and left brain and therefore enhances our learning. It offers patients and providers of health care a way to reflect on circumstances, excavate inner wisdom and transform their lives. It is an art form that restores our wholeness body, mind and spirit. This project is original poetry by a nurse who has worked at the bedside and in leadership roles. The poetry reflects her life journey that includes how patients and colleagues have contributed to her growth. The book entitled Change is Life: Poems of Personal Transformation in the Work Place offers poems about organizational life in healthcare and ways to use continuous change as learning. An extension of the book is a poetry and music CD called Alive with Passion. The CD combines the world renowned, healing music of Susan Mazer and Dallas Smith with the original poetry written and read by this author who has studied, written and preformed poetry for nearly a decade. It offers reflections on finding passion and purpose in life. Included in both are poems like; Barbara’s Gift, a piece about nurse learning from a cancer patient and The Light of Hope which inspires patient and nurse to mutually hold on to hope. Many patients and people from all roles in healthcare have used these poetry mediums successfully as they have been introduced into meetings, workshops and healing sessions. This project brings poetry into health care settings to enhance caring, healing and transformation.
