On-site international exchanges for nurses have existed for years and their benefits are well documented in the literature. Use of distance learning technology, however, is a relatively new strategy for international exchanges. Technology can increase opportunities for nurses to develop a more global perspective of professional nursing practice without requiring expensive and time-consuming on-site visits. Distance learning technologies that can be employed for this purpose include e-mail exchanges, discussion groups, on-line courses, video-conferencing and other similar methods. Issues that impact the use of distance learning technologies involve computer access, equipment compatibility, cost, time, cultural values, communication skills and language differences. This presentation will examine each of the above issues and will offer strategies to promote more positive outcomes when using distance learning technology for international exchange experiences. Objectives: (1) Explore the impact of using technology to increase international exchange experiences for nurses. (2) Identify strategies for resolving some of the complex issues involved in using distance learning technology for international exchanges.
