Induction is the basic tenet of qualitative inquiry. Most qualitative questions explore the meaning or experience of a particular phenomenon, and for these studies, induction as an analytic approach is essential for validity. However, when the investigator’s interest is in a concept (rather than a phenomenon or experience) the researcher must resolve the inherent challenge to utilizing to induction. In other words, when working from the conceptual level, it is not possible to commence inquiry inductively. Bracketing provides one commonly recommended solution to this problem. Other methods include beginning to explore the phenomenon inductively or to use methods of context stripping, decontextualization or techniques of visual mapping to explore the interrelationships of co-occurring concepts. In this presentation, the ramifications of failing to develop qualitatively derived concepts using these principles will be briefly discussed in terms of threats to validity. Techniques for avoiding such threats to validity will be highlighted across major qualitative methods.
