[Scientific session research presentation] It is estimated that over 10,000 women in the U.S. and tens of thousands more in other countries have turned to bioidentical hormone therapy (BHT) for relief of symptoms of perimenopause and menopause. Bioidentical hormones are plant derived and molecularly identical to endogenous female hormones. Clinicians who support and prescribe BHT as an option for their patients customize the patient's prescription dosage based on the patient's physical examination, symptoms, history, and current lab values of relevant hormones. BHT is custom compounded by trained pharmacists utilizing products manufactured in FDA inspected facilities. Female hormone status can be assessed by serum, urine, or saliva tests. Saliva testing is becoming increasing popular in the US and internationally as a convenient, safe, cost effective option for assessment of women. Opponents of saliva testing argue the validity of saliva testing as a clinically relevant tool. This study looks at the state of the science regarding saliva as a tool for hormone assessment in women. A review of published evidence regarding saliva testing was undertaken to assess the quality, availability, and transferability of research regarding saliva testing as an assessment tool of perimenopausal and menopausal women. The review included assessment of levels of evidence of  U.S. and international literature available in English. Study results demonstrate there is adequate evidence to support use of saliva testing as an effective clinical tool for measuring hormone status in perimenopausal and menopausal women. The multidisciplinary study team included a doctorally prepared nurse practitioner, practicing nurse practitioners and physicians, endocrinologist, a PhD neuro-endocrinepharmacologist, a biostatistician and a PhD laboratory consultant. An annotated evidence based evaluation of the international review of literature will be made available to session attendees interested in learning more about utilization of saliva testing as a clinical tool in women's health.
