Title:Nurse Manager
[Symposium clinical presentation] The current literature clearly indicates there is a paucity of research that explores the role of the psychiatric nurse in a clinical setting. The research does indicate that there is role ambiguity within psychiatric nursing & that role ambiguity is linked with nursing burnout. In a profession that is in the midst of a shortage without a clear end in sight focus on issues that lead to nursing departing the profession has to be closely explored, particularly in specialty nursing. Utilizing grounded theory methodologies two panels of expert participants were obtained from the Department of State Hospital Section (DSHS) in the state of Texas. One panel consisted of nurse leaders that included shift supervisors up to nurse executives. The other panel consisted of clinical nurses with a wide range of nursing experience. Multiple state hospitals were represented in the study. The research questionnaire consisted of six open ended questions. Electronic methodologies were utilized for sending & receiving questionnaires. The responses were carefully analyzed & reduced into themes. Betty Neuman Systems Model was the sensitizing framework for this study. This study has not been defended for completion of a Masters in the Science of Nursing further explanation of the results will remain pending. The preferred method of presentation can be either poster board or oral. Psychiatric nursing is a specialty that is often overlooked. The purpose of this presentation is to generate energy, invoke creative expressive thinking.
