Gaming is not intended to present new knowledge, but rather to complement and reinforce knowledge that has already been acquired. By incorporating all three of the learning domains-cognitive, affective, and psychomotor-learning retention may be increased up to 90%. Using the nonlinear presentation format of PowerPoint is an innovative methodology in meeting the diverse needs of learners through technology. Therefore, nursing educators should be encouraged to use technology driven gaming techniques to reinforce and promote learning retention, critical thinking, and decision-making. Gaming promotes critical thinking by providing the opportunity for problem solving, creative decision making, and reinforcement of learned material. Gaming allows for immediate feedback which is desirable for the adult learner. Despite the notion that a fun activity cannot be instructional, gaming is stimulating and decreases boredom, which is frequently cited as a disadvantage to the didactic style of teaching or on-line reading in a web-based course. After reviewing the literature it appears that the truths of gaming outweigh the criticisms for the use of gaming. Briefly, the truths or advantages about gaming include active participation, increased knowledge retention, creative thinking, and motivation while providing an evaluative tool and fun. The features of PowerPoint are an excellent source for upholding the truths of gaming while minimizing the criticisms. This presentation provides a brief overview of the literature pertaining to instructional games using technology as a creative strategy for adult education. Instruction is given on how to create games and quizzes using PowerPoint’s nonlinear presentation format. Different styles are reviewed with examples. Directions and resources are shared.
