[Scientific session research presentation] Introduction: Many nursing education programs are increasing student admissions to help allay the critical shortage of practicing nurses. However, with more students comes the need for additional student clinical learning sites.  Because placement in a clinical setting does not in itself guarantee a good learning experience, and because clinical learning is critical to nursing education, educators must attend to the quality of student clinical experiences, in order to provide experiences that best promote student learning. The Student Evaluation of Clinical Education Environment (SECEE) Inventory was developed to measure student perceptions of the clinical learning environment.  The original inventory was significantly revised to more accurately reflect the major forces in the clinical environment.  The revised version contains 32 Likert-based items within three subscales: learning opportunities, instructor facilitation of learning, and staff facilitation of learning.  Purpose of Study: To assess the validity and reliability of the revised SECEE Inventory.  Methods and Results: Data representing over 2100 student evaluations over a four year period at a large mid-Atlantic university were used for analysis.  Overall instrument reliability was .94, with subscale reliability ranging from .82 to .94. Confirmatory Factor Analysis with a forced three factor solution demonstrated strong item loadings on expected factors, with the exception of only two items. In addition, the inventory was able to detect significant differences between specific clinical sites, clinical instructors, and staff/preceptors.  Conclusions: The SECEE appears to be an efficient means to gather data about the quality of the clinical learning environment, and to make this data meaningful to faculty, administrators, and clinical agencies for use in decision-making about student clinical experiences.  As nursing programs continue to expand clinical sites to accommodate increasing numbers of nursing students, this inventory could help in monitoring the quality of new learning sites, in order to promote a positive student learning experience.
