A key indicator of the quality of a nursing education program is the performance of its graduates as first-time takers of the NCLEX. As a result, nursing schools are open to strategies that strengthen the performance of their graduates on the examination. The purpose of this session is to present a proven framework for optimizing NCLEX performance and how students and nursing education programs can use it in preparing for the licensing examination. Review books and review courses have been an integral part of preparing for the nursing licensure examination for over 25 years. Traditionally, NCLEX review courses combine extensive content review with practice questions and frequently a post-test. The KATTS framework focuses on the three components of achieving a maximum score on an examination ? an adequate knowledge base, active anxiety control, and effective test-taking skills. In KATTS, each of the components becomes one side of an equilateral triangle, illustrating that all three components must be present and in proper balance in order to maximize one's score. If any one component is low, then the score earned on the test will be lower than what could be achieved. Conversely, by strengthening not just one but all of these components, a student or graduate can improve his/her overall test score significantly. This framework has been used successfully by the author in designing remedial tutoring programs and in assisting first-time NCLEX testers in preparing for the licensing exam. (All but two graduates from this baccalaureate program have been successful on their first attempt at the NCLEX-RN in the last 4 years.) Specific strategies for strengthening each side of the triangle will be presented along with examples of individual and program successes in utilizing the KATTS framework.
