Abstract:
Expressions of Care: Drawings of BSN Student-Patient Encounters
Conference Sponsor:Sigma Theta Tau International
Conference Year:2005
Author:Puckett, Theresa Louise, RN, MSN, CPNP
P.I. Institution Name:Ursuline College
Title:Co-Director of the Graduate Nursing Program
Undergraduate nursing students experience a range of emotions as they transition from layperson to health care professional. The emotional burden experienced by students due to caregiving activities is not often recognized or addressed. Students do not know how, where, or with whom to discuss these intense feelings. Therefore, I developed an exercise that can be used in clinical post-conference with undergraduate nursing students. First, I have students sit quietly and recall a patient encounter that was particularly meaningful or memorable. Then, I set out art supplies such as colored paper, pencils, markers, and crayons and ask the students to visually depict the patient encounter and to write a paragraph describing the finished artwork. Finally, I allow an opportunity for students to share their work with the group, as desired. This presentation features a total of six drawings created by three sophomores and three seniors in a BSN program. The students' explanations of the artwork accompany the drawings and highlight the nurse-patient relationship.
