Problem: Nursing is at a leadership crossroads. Placing value on operational excellence over innovation in professional and clinically-based organizations has created a static and impractically hierarchical form of leadership. This leadership paradigm responds only to organizational feedback and remains internally focused, falling short of nursing’s potential for global reach. Nursing and its organizations will fail to transcend current and future workforce issues, and fall short of global influence, if it remains in the singular quest for excellence. Innovation: Innovation before excellence, Ib4E, must be the primary organizational driver of professional nursing organizations if global influence and sustainability are to be achieved. Ib4E requires multiple, simultaneous visions with a continuous planning cycle. Organizations executing the Ib4E driver hold multiple visions, providing strategic positioning in a continuously changing environment. The Ib4E driver focuses on effectiveness, not efficiency. It is a transformational structure that requires fluid and reflexive leaders. Leaders of an Ib4E organization will be conferred by experience and preparedness for particular scenarios. Significance for Leadership: The implications and significance for nursing is far reaching. Ib4E requires nursing to critically examine conventional leader lines, requiring the selection of leaders based on their potential effectiveness rather than traditional measures such as educational titles and prior positions held. The inclusiveness of the Ib4E model requires nursing to broaden its view on who and what qualifies as a “nurse leader”. Nursing organizations whose primary function is to be exclusive rather than inclusive will be unable to implement Ib4E. The model requires that individuals have in view at all times “the big picture” and individuals will be measured by the value of their contribution to the effectiveness of the organization. Ib4E is a true global mindset that is inclusive by nature and is a necessary organizational model for the future success of nursing.
