Title:
Introduction to Nursing as a Career Choice
Abstract:
Introduction to Nursing as a Career Choice
Conference Sponsor:Sigma Theta Tau International
Conference Year:2001
Conference Date:November 10 - 14, 2001
Author:Lane, Suzanne
Purpose: To develop and implement a short program to introduce high school students to nursing as a positive career choice. Goals: To clarify the roles and opportunities of nursing to a select group of high school students. Process: In conjunction with the Health Science Academy of Allentown High School, the nursing students developed a half-day seminar on nursing for high school students. The guidance counselor and project director selected students for participation. Most of the students had not considered nursing as a career path because they thought of nurses as merely someone who helps a patient at the bedside. They didn't see all the opportunities. Students were given a tour of the nursing lab and information on several nursing options. The students were provided with exercises and experiments and a hands-on taste of some clinical procedures. The discussion also included the need for all nurses to have a minimum of a college degree. Results: The students were impressed by the starting salaries in nursing and were encouraged that a career in the health care field on this level can really make a difference. The evaluations of the project were extremely positive. We have been asked to repeat this program two times next year.
