P.I. Institution Name:North Carolina Center for Nursing
The North Carolina Center for Nursing is implementing a statewide public awareness campaign designed to communicate positive images of nursing careers among both the general public and prospective nursing students. We are working directly with school systems to inform them of the skills and academic rigors required of today’s nurse. We are working with schools of nursing to develop models for improving enrollment and graduation rates. We are encouraging employers to take an active role in “growing nurses locally” and facilitating a smooth transition of new nurses into the workplace. Findings from state, national and international youth focus groups guide development of all materials and recruitment strategies. The Center for Nursing is combining it’s research and nursing knowledge with the marketing expertise of Bernard HODES Group, a national advertising firm, to develop materials that improve awareness and encourage adolescents and minorities to consider careers in nursing and/or health care. Materials and strategies developed and/or being developed include: (1) 30-second “The Power” video public service announcement in collaboration with WRAZ FOX-50 in Durham. Has been distributed to sister NC FOX stations in North Carolina; (2) 30-second “Imagine the Difference” video public service announcement to be distributed to 54 NC TV stations; (3) 30 and 60-second “Imagine the Difference; (4) ” audio public service announcements to be distributed to 290 NC radio stations; (5) "The Power to Make a Difference" web site coloring sheet for K-3 grades; (6) "Nursing Exploration" patch award program for Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Career Explorers and other youth groups; (7) "The Power of Nursing" library book designed for 4th, 5th and 6th grade readers; (8) “Newspapers In Education” career information pages for Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, Advanced Practice Nurse and Nurse Assistant; (9) Internet web site at www.NurseNC.org to serve as a clearinghouse for NC nursing career information; (10) 12 minute “Be the Difference” video designed to encourage youth to consider a career in nursing and/or health care; (11) “Nursing in North Carolina” information brochure; (12) "Power" poster for elementary schools; (13) “Be the Difference” poster for middle and high-schools; (14) "Talk with Kids about Nursing" ambassador card and article; (15) “Nursing: The Power to Make a Difference” exhibits at NC State Fair, Health Occupations Education conferences and Career Explorer conferences. The NC Center for Nursing encourages collaboration among schools, health care employers and schools of nursing to develop experiences designed to increase youth awareness of nursing and/or health careers such as shadow experiences, nursing camps, future nurse clubs, after-school programs, etc.
