The UVM School of Nursing began offering web-based courses in Spring 1999. Faculty and students responded positively to the enhanced interactive capability of web-based courseware, and the increased learner flexibility and accessibility that web-based delivery offered. Our first online program, the first online program at UVM, “Learning by Degrees” an RN-BS program for diploma and associate degree registered nurses, was introduced in January 2001. The program is delivered using WebCT, a multidimensional courseware product with a rich variety of interactive tools and designer options. This presentation will provide an overview of the development of the “Learning by Degrees” program, and will highlight the program components, marketing strategies, and ongoing student orientation and support mechanisms. Strategies to facilitate the development of an online community of learners will be shared and future directions for web-based learning at the School of Nursing will be discussed.
