[2nd International Nursing Research Conference for the World Academy of Nursing Science - Presentation] Background and Objectiveüs: In recent years, the gap in practical abilities between nursing students and novice nurses has been growing increasingly problematic. There is a significant difference between ideal class room settings and real world clinical settings.
Our research objective is to investigate the frequency of alternatives to traditional perineal care procedures covered in the current body of nursing education materials to measure this gap.
üMethodsü:
We reviewed clinical nursing skill textbooks and audio-visual aids released within the last ten years which focus on basic, gerontological and home care nursing. We then analyzed relevant sections regarding procedures, equipment and reasoning pertaining to perineal care.
üEthical Considerationüs:
The study has been approved by the Ethical Committee of Kansai University of Nursing and Health Sciences.
Resultsü:
Of twenty seven clinical nursing skill textbooks reviewed, only one included instruction in the use of and rationale behind incontinence pads as an alternative to the use of bedpans in perineal care. Of fourteen basic nursing textbooks reviewed, only one included instruction in the use of incontinence pads, but did not provide a discussion of rationale. Of four audio-visual aids reviewed, none included a clinical alternative to bedpans.
üDiscussionü:
While the fundamentals of perineal care should be foundational in clinical instruction, such education should also reflect contemporary changes in the clinical setting, such as the use of incontinence pads as  an alternative to the more traditional use of bedpans. This change should be reflected not only in class room instruction, but also in textbook content. This would help foster a smoother transition for nursing students becoming novice nurses.
