The development of theory-based questionnaires to assess the nature of staff nurse and baccalaureate student mentoring relationships, transformation in perspectives, and perceived empowerment of nurses and students will be described.  Instrument development and testing is the first phase of a 3-year SSHRC-funded study on mentoring baccalaureate students by staff nurses. Questionnaires were developed by a team of faculty members, graduate students, and clinical practice leaders from acute care and public health agencies to maximize theoretical rigour, comprehensiveness, clarity, intelligibility, usability, and credibility. Items were based on the qualitative results from a pilot study of staff nurse-student mentoring completed in 2004, the Canadian Nurses? Association (1995) definition of mentorship,  Mezirow?s (1990; 1991) Theory of Perspective Transformation, and Kanter?s (1977; 1993) Theory of Structural Empowerment in Organizations. Criteria used to determine inclusion of items during instrument development and examples of items are presented. Procedures to assess instrument validity and reliability, as well as the acceptability of the electronic response system, are described.
