During this session of the symposium, the presenters will focus on discussion of barriers encountered during the initiation of the EBP mentor model as identified by APNs through baseline data for model evaluation. Strategies used to overcome these barriers will be the primary focus of this session. Some of the barriers to be discussed include: a) competing priorities for APNs’ and EBP mentor’s time, b) the need for integration of clinical practice and scholarly practice goals, c) a lack of computer program (statistical) availability among the APNs, and d) a lack of outcome data available to APNs for practice outcome evaluation. The presenters will discuss strategies used to overcome these and other barriers and will emphasize the strengths of barrier identification and resolution. As well, the presenters will focus on discussion of strategies used to evaluate the EBP mentor model. Other lessons learned that will be addressed include a) strategic planning to obtain funding for the model early in the process, b) establishing clinical meaningfulness of all endeavors, c) collaborating with interdisciplinary colleagues for EBP initiatives, d) working with nursing administration to increase involvement of APNs, and e) EBP implementation strategies such as development of specific EBP guidelines. Pitfalls encountered by the EBP mentor team will be discussed as well as strategies for resolving these difficulties. Opportunities for interactive discussion with participants will be key to the success of this session.
