Nursing education in Germany is moving rapidly towards an academic program. Until now the basic Nursing training is an in-service program. Basic diplomas are attainable in general nursing (including psychiatry), paediatric care and geriatric care. Germany is divided in several “Bundesländer” with autonomous regulation systems. For that reason there are differences in educational programs. Up to now there is no basic nursing program at Bachelor level, but there are several initiatives to come to such a program. Besides extra training programs to a huge amount of different subjects, the educational programs at Universities of applied sciences are rapidly growing: from only several nursing programs in the eighties to over 40 programs now. Since 1996 the Private University of Witten/Herdecke offers an academic program in Science of Nursing, focusing on direct patient care aspects. There are three academic programs: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (6 Semester), Master of Science in Nursing (3 Semester) and a PhD-program. Until now the Bachelor program is open to students who have one of the basic diplomas in Nursing, and is focusing on a broad spectrum of nursing themes, developments in nursing and changes in the field of nursing, using scientific methods to analyze these situations. Main topics are; health and illness in context; nursing; scientific methods; quality management and seminars. Included is an international stage period in first and third world countries, in total 8 weeks. A workgroup is preparing a curriculum for a basic nursing program at Bachelor level. In the winter semester 2000/2001 the first students received the title “Master of Science in Nursing”: a new title for Germany, but also a milestone for the Institute. The PhD program started with students who achieved an equivalent to the Master of Science. The first Doctorates in Science of Nursing from this program are expected in 2001. According to the Bologna Agreement of 1999, the Institute of Nursing Science is developing a credit point system, to facilitate international exchange programs.
