21st INRC [Research Presentation] Purpose: With an increase of age, hypertension is one of common chronic diseases. Life satisfaction is an essential component of quality of life in people with hypertension. To examine factors associated with life satisfaction could be useful for management of hypertension. Methods: The study was a secondary data analysis that was based on the data from 2003 Survey of Health and Living Status of the Middle Aged and Elderly in Taiwan Survey Report. The dataset contained health conditions of two cohorts; one represented middle aged and elderly, and the other represented elderly. Current analyses reflected 1,503 subjects with hypertension. Results: The dataset represented 3,778 middle aged and elderly. Of them, 1,503 were diagnosed as hypertension. The mean age of the hypertension sample was 72.7 years old, and 14.8% had stroke. There were 730 men and 773 women. About 15% were current smokers, and half them exercised regularly. Unfortunately, less than one fifth were aware of diet therapy for hypertension. Factors associated with better life satisfaction were women, being married, checking blood pressure regularly, higher scores of knowledge of diet therapy for hypertension, and exercised regularly. Having pain, fell, stroke, and higher life stress were associated with poor life satisfaction. Conclusion: Findings supported that people felt more satisfied, if they could actively manage their hypertension in daily life, i.e., checking blood pressure and exercise regularly. Furthermore, knowledge about diet therapy for hypertension is needed for middle aged and elderly with hypertension. Being control over daily life and knowledge of diet therapy are important for hypertension management.
