[22nd International Nursing Research Congress - Research Presentation] Purpose: The purpose of the study was to determine the usage and the effectiveness of cranberry on preventing UTI and whether there is any gender difference in UTI. Methods: This was a systematic review study. Literature was searched from November 2007 to September 2010. Searched databases included Medline, Cumulative index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), PubMed, The Cochrane Library, Chinese Electronic Periodical Services (CEPS), Chinese Electronic Theses, and Dissertations Service (CETD). Searched keywords were cranberry, urinary tract infection, gender difference, systematic review. The quality of all articles was appraised by two independent authors. Articles with cranberry intervention and subjects diagnosed as UTI were retrieved. The effect size would be calculated by comprehensive meta-analysis program.
Results: The review is in progress. Quality of each study was reviewed. The cranberry products? method of administration, dosage, concentration would be investigated, and the effect size would be calculated to evaluate the effect of the intervention of cranberry product on preventing UTI and the difference between gender.
Conclusion: Cranberry may be effective in preventing urinary tract infection and improving urinary tract healthy in both men and women.
