[22nd International Nursing Research Congress - Research Presentation] Purpose:   This qualitative research, in order to learn the practices performed by nurses of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia. Methods: The theoretical framework used was the Basic Human Needs Theory of Maslow, because the patient has critical needs that are closely interrelated that need to be addressed in the care process, in order to reduce potential complications that pose a threat to the life of these patients. The study setting was public teaching hospital of average size, located in Dourados-MS, with the 12 nurses as subjects, totaling 100% of these workers in adult and pediatric intensive care unit of this institution. The ability to collect data was an interview guide with open questions guiding, which were recorded and transcribed. For analysis of the data was calculated using the collective subject discourse based on social representations theory, which aims to promote an organization and tabulation of qualitative data from verbal nature. Results:
The results show seven axes of analysis that defined the concept of hospital infection presented by nurses, positioning the patient on mechanical ventilation to prevent pneumonia, the assessment of sedation, prescription and aspiration technique, the technique of oral hygiene and mounting mechanical ventilation system. The concept of IH is known by nurses, but there is doubt as to the delimitation of time on the time to diagnose this nosology. Conclusion:
There is a big weakness on the techniques of aspiration, oral hygiene and evaluation of sedation. Besides the flaws in my techniques, there is still aggravated by lack of some essential materials for proper nursing care to patients intubated and on mechanical ventilation in order to make the prevention of nosocomial pneumonia.
