Approximately one year ago, a new procedure for maintaining the patency of enteral feeding tubes was approved in our facility. Anecdotally, the clogging of feeding tubes was an issue. Multiple methods were used for de-clogging the tubes, thwarting the housewide policy currently approved for use. An interdisciplinary team of nurses and dietitians reviewed the current research and drafted a new policy based on the literature. A staff nurse, also a new graduate student, was interested in evaluating this new policy. Through her efforts, an interdisciplinary team was formed to evaluate the policy. This presentation will explain the research base for the policy, the evaluation and data collection method, and the findings. This structure and process can be used for evaluating other evidence-based acute care policies.
