The purpose of this study was to explore the concept of spirituality and to gain an understanding of nursing interventions that may improve well-being. Hybrid Model developed by Schwartz-Barcoad and Kim(1993) was used as the concept analysis framework. The Model was composed of three steps which were theoretical analysis, fieldwork analysis and analytical phase. Study participants for fieldwork analysis were 5 people who were supposed to live highly spiritual lives after experiencing a critical life event. Data was obtained from participant observation for five days and in-depth interview of one cancer patient, one pastor, and three student missionaries in 2000. There were 2~3 interviews each lasting one to two hours. Interviews were tape recorded and transcribed verbatim. In this study, 'Harmonious Interconnectedness', 'Transcendence', 'Integrative Energy','Holiness' and 'Purpose and Meaning in Life' emerged as the critical attributes of spirituality. The harmonious interconnectedness with a Supreme Being led to the harmonious interconnectedness with self and neighbors or nature and played an important role in activating other critical attributes of spirituality. The harmonious interconnectedness is at the heart of spirituality. 'Integrative Energy', the second critical attribute of spirituality, was observed as the force integrating all the dimensions of man, the creative force, and the source of inner strength. 'Transcendence', The third critical attribute of spirituality, is going beyond the present situation and having new perspective when one has harmonious interconnectedness with self, other, and a Supreme Being. It also fulfills self-healing, sublimation, adjustment, and wellness. 'Holiness', the fourth critical attribute of spirituality, was observed only in fieldwork analysis. 'Meaning and purpose in life', the fifth critical attribute of spirituality, was the rediscovery of value, meaning and purpose in life when the critical attribute of harmonious interconnectedness of spirituality is activated. The antecedent of the spirituality represented as 'spirit' implanted in man and its potential enablers were 'Pivotal life event', 'Introspection/self-reflection', Interconnectedness with all living things', and an 'Awarenes of a Supreme Being'. The consequences of this concept may be described as 'physical, psychosocial, and spiritual well-being'. In conclusion, the results of this study suggests that the promotion of interconnectedness is the most important element in spiritual nursing intervention.
