Objective: To elucidate the prevalence and related factors of dysphagia in house post stroke patients in korea. Design: A structured questionnaire completed at interview, was used to assess dysphagia and to gather demographic and clinical data. Population:A total 212 subjects with stroke were selected in 7 community health center in korea. Sample: 113 subjects with dysphagia were selected. Finally, 85 subjects were selected from 113 dysphagic post stroke patients.(except 28 unconscious patients) Years: From January. 8. to June. 30. 2003.(6 months) Concepts: Dysphagia, depression, ADL, eating pattern. Method: Dysphagia was measured when a subject met the following criteria:self-report of swallowing difficulty and a score derived form the swallowing questionnaire. ADL with Barthel index, depression with CES-D were measured. The data was analyzed with SPSS program. Findings: The prevalence rate for dysphagia in house post stroke patients was 48.6%. Related factors of dysphagia were depression, ADL ,Duration of illness, site of lesion, dysphasia, sensory impairement. Conclusions: the prevalence rate for dysphagia in house post stroke patients in korea(48.6%)was a higher than in Taiwan(44.6%)and in US(35.4%) Improving of ADL, treatment of depression may be improving swallowing ability. Implications: Recognition of the factors related to dysphagia will lead health professionals to develop different strategies for dysphagia rehabilitation program in house post-stroke patients.
