Title:Research Associate
[22nd International Nursing Research Congress - Research Presentation]Purpose:
In this study, we aimed to clarify the skills and knowledge acquired by nursing students during the palliative care practicum and determine the educational benefits of this exercise.
Methods:
We analyzed the reports of 84 University N juniors that were submitted when they participated in the embalming makeup practicum. From these reports, we extracted context relating to what students learned from the practicum, coded statements with similar semantic content, and categorized the coded statements by further increasing their levels of abstraction.
Results:
As a result, we extracted three categories: ?a nurse?s way of being,? ?giving meaning to care provided by the family to the patient,? and the ?appropriateness of care to allow for acceptance of death peacefully.? The students stated the importance of conducting embalming makeup not simply as postmortem care, but determining the appropriate moment with the family to help the patient accept death peacefully and the importance of deepening one?s own humanity. These findings suggest the meaningfulness of the embalming makeup practicum.
Conclusion:
Comments from nursing students who participated in the practicum indicated that they learned the importance of conducting Angel Care, not simply as postmortem care, but learned to determine the appropriate moment with the family to help the patient accept death peacefully and the importance of deepening one?s humanity. Our results suggest that the Angel Care practicum is an important learning experience for end-of-life nursing education.
