[22nd International Nursing Research Congress - Research Presentation] Purpose: to examine the situation of breastfeeding during adolescence in Ribeirao Preto, Brazil, in order to characterize the practice of breastfeeding among adolescents according to the indicators of the World Health Organization.
Methods:  this was a cross-sectional and descriptive study. Data was collected in the II National Survey of Breastfeeding Prevalence, carried out in the National Vaccination Campaign of August 2008, were analyzed using SPSS, version 10.0.
Results: Participants were 229 adolescent mothers, with an average age of 18 years, most of them (27.1%) used health services in the district west of the county. Most of adolescents mothers (74.7%) breastfed their child. Considering mothers of children up to 180 days of life (62.8%), it was found that only 36.1% offered exclusive breastfeeding and 15.9% had already weaned their child.
Conclusion: This study demonstrated that most adolescent mothers offered inadequate feeding for their child. Therefore, there is a need to improve the quality of health care for them and their children. Also it is important an anticipatory guidance to prevent problems and to encourage the establishment of satisfactory breastfeeding practice among adolescents mothers and their babies.
