Abstract:

Conference Sponsor:Sigma Theta Tau International
Conference Year:2011
Author:Shimada, Chiori, MA
P.I. Institution Name:Ibaraki Prefectural University of Health Sciences
Title:Associate Professor
[22nd International Nursing Research Congress - Research Presentation] Purpose:
(1)Construction of an e-learning system for nursing care necessary at antenatal checkups
(2)Evaluation of practical use through trial application of the e-learning system
Methods:
(1)The scripting language used in implementation was Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP).
(2)The system was provided to 3rd year students of A University from the end of September to the end of November, 2005. 16 students used it.
(3)This study was approved by the Ethical Committee of Ibaraki Prefectural University of Health Sciences.
Results:
1.Summary of system
Learning contents consist of 3 sections. The "case study" section consists of the "expectant mother's view", recreating experiences from the subjective view of the pregnant woman, and the "nurse's view", identifying nursing skills from a professional perspective. Content is presented as a story in which an imaginary pregnant woman attends an antenatal checkup. The "expectant mother's view" consists of a total of 16 pages. The "nurse's view"also has a total of 16 pages. The "basic nursing skills section" comprises 7 pages. The "basic knowledge section" comprises 20 pages of test questions and corresponding pages of answers and explanations, giving a total of 40 pages.
2.Evaluation of utility
The mean number of log ins was 1.3, and the mean total period of time logged in was 58.0 minutes. For users, the system functioned smoothly, and there were no problems operating the system. No major system errors were recorded.
Conclusion:
No defects were identified in the practical use of the e-learning system constructed in this study, and the system was evaluated as adequate for use by students.
