The purpose of this study was to classify variations in creamatocrit during expressing of breast milk from mothers of preterm infants. This classification is helpful for expressing higher calorie breast milk for the preterm infant.
The milk samples were collected from 18 mothers of preterm infants (between 7 to 64 days postpartum). Mothers expressed breast milk using an electric breast pump (Symphony) simultaneously after 3 to 5 hours their last expression. The collection containers were changed every 30 seconds per breast, the other breast milk was collected in one container. Milk expression was not interrupted by the sampling procedures.
The creamatocrit of each milk sample was calculated using the Creamatocrit Plus. Data were analyzed by the method of cluster analysis. Four patterns of variation in creamatocrit were classified.
