[22nd International Nursing Research Congress - Research Symposium Presentation] University context promote parties few days-along. Since 2006, Peer-Education's group (Before you get burnt) promote consciousness in recreation context to prevent the abusive alcohol consumption and to promote fun without risk. Peer-Education makes use of peer influence in a positive way because it is a pedagogical strategy whereby well-trained and motivated people undertake organized educational activities with their peers. Peer-Educators apply Freire's humanistic approach to promote empowerment of university students. Information is transmitted more easily if the educators and the audiences shared background and interests, use of the same language and role demands.
Purpose: To identify how adequate is Peer-Education to better address harm reduction in recreational settings
Methods: Participatory research. During street festivities (2007-2010), students conduct peer-to-peer counselling using a dialogical approach to promote health literacy about alcohol abuse and sexual behaviour. Also provide condoms and first-aid. Students become Peer-Educators by 30h training course.
Analyzing data (repeated-measures) from the 3350 peer-counselling conducted in nights of 2 academic festivity (Coimbra 2007-10 and Covilha 2009-10) and phone/e-mail interview conducted 3months after: alcohol consumption and related attitudes, consciousness and predisposition to act of university students participating in these festivities
Results: Data showed that this peer-driven model was effective because it promote changes on alcohol-consumption and was rated as very positive due to easier communication, credibility, accessibility and availability. The qualities highlighted in peer-educators were sympathy, patience, not to make value judgments, level of knowledge, understanding, and closeness of age, clarity, simplicity and openness
Conclusion: Youth Peer-Educators are less likely to be seen as authority figures rather than perceived as receiving advice from a friend in the know with similar concerns. It is also a way to double empower youth, offering them an opportunity to be educators and to access the information and services they need to protect their health.
