[Research Presentation] Purpose: The object of this research, was to clarify, what kind is the care pathway of hip replacement patients and their supervision in Finland. The research problems were: What kind would be the seamless care pathway of hip replacement patients according to the literature? What kind is the care pathway of hip replacement patients in Finland currently? How the care pathway should be developed in the future? Methods:  The first, theoretical, literature based method, was used to clarify the optimal model of the care pathway. The critically chosen literature concerning care pathway and patient care was used to reply to the first research problem. Theoretical research, the study followed the principles of philosophical study, using the critical method. A questionnaire was used to collect information of the care pathway of hip arthroplasty patients and their supervision in Finland.  The questionnaire was sent to all Finnish Central hospital districts (20) and 10 private or other health care units where hip replacement operations were made (year  2006). Also the patient teaching materials used by the health care units were analyzed using content analysis. Results: As a result of a model of optimal care pathway was created. According to the survey, the hip replacement patients care pathway seem to be quite similar in whole Finland. After the operating decision, the patients receive information, prepare for the treatment, will be operated at the hospital and soon after this, return home. The organizations had developed the hip arthroplasty patients supervision. The biggest problems in the care pathway was in the communication and information management between the different organizations. Conclusion: Although hospitals have developed their patient care, there is still much to do with the patient supervision and care pathway. Especially the information transfer systems should be developed in order to make the care pathway seamless.
