Cigarette smoking is not only known to cause various diseases but can cause serious problems for adolescents whose cells and tissue are not developed completely. Recently the rates of adolescent smoking in Korea has increased rapidly, and various health problems related to smoking can be expected to increase in the future. To decrease the smoking rate among adolescents, research is being done from different perspectives, but in spite of the effort, smoking rates are continuously increasing and the age of first experimentation with tobacco is decreasing. Studies on smoking behavior report that assertiveness is very important factor influencing on the adolescent smoking. This study was conducted to develope a video program for the purpose of adolescent's smoking prevention. The content of video introduces three smoke tempting situations. One at the school with peers, at home when parents were out, and at the game room where there were many smoking adults as well as adolescents. In each situation correct assertiveness technique and the satisfaction after overcoming the temptation was illustrated. A nonequivalent control group pre-posttest design was used. The 533 participating subjects, 269 in experimental group and 264 control group, in the study were 7th grade male students. The experimental group received 17 minute video education, and the control group did not receive any treatments. The results show that the student's assertiveness was increased significantly in the experimental group after the video education. Student's attitude on smoking became more negative in the experimental group. However, in the control group, the intention, assertiveness, attitude was not changed. This study has implications on theory, research and practical area. In the theory, applicability and effectiveness of the Model Learning Theory and the Behavior Modification Theory was tested on the area of adolescent's smoking prevention. In research, the assertiveness was founded to be an important factor to change adolescent's attitude toward smoking and further researches on this parameter can be pursued. This video program is expected to be used not only in the professional smoking prevention education institutions, but in general middle and high school settings as well. Further study on longitudinal effect and application on drinking, drug abuse are also recommended.
