[2nd International Nursing Research Conference for the World Academy of Nursing Science - Presentation] Background: According to the suggestion of the "Taiwan Healthcare Indicator Series", emergency surgery's waiting time must be less than 30 minutes. However, the waiting time of emergency surgery is usually prolonged; and it not only affects the patient' rights but have also delays medical treatment of patients. Objective: This study analyzes the primary cause of postponing patients' surgery waiting time in the emergency room. Method: A total of 476 emergency surgical cases investigated from January to June 2009. 281(p=59.0%), whose emergency surgery's waiting time was longer than 30 minutes. The primary causes of the postponing of the emergency surgery were analyzed. Result: In this research, two factors of postponing the patients' surgery waiting time were found, including the staff factor and equipment factor. The main causes include patient?s lack of time for NPO(n=80, p=28.5%), the lack of free
emergency operation rooms(n=64, p=22.8%) and busy physicians(n=47, p=16.7%).
Conclusions The findings of this study may contribute to establishing a more secure and efficient emergency medical environment and improve the quality of emergency medical care. Some strategies were suggested. Managers have to regard the proposed respondents, clarify the definition of the emergency surgery, and establish the operation codes on
ER. Therefore, the nurse can effectively apply the time to prepare patient and family in order to reduce their anxiety.  Disclosure of Interest: None Declared
