Purpose: This project is trying to development and evaluates the efficacy of the ?nursing care plan decision support system?. Methods: From January 2002 to October 2003, development process of the computerized nursing care plan decision support system involved three main steps: (1) The modification of present nursing assessment form based on the Gordon functional health pattern assessment concept; (2) By using the PDA (SONY CLIE NX70) as a mobile assessment tool, and Arden-syntax language to set up an decision support system, to assist nurses to making timely nursing assessment and appropriate nursing diagnosis; and (3) Using one nursing diagnosis ?risk to injury/fall? as an example to test the system?s function. From October 2003 to November 2003, after one month deployment the nursing care plan decision support system into the clinical setting, modified from the technology acceptance model (TAM), a 7-points scale, 28 questions questionnaire was used to collect the 57 nurses? perception of ?ease of use? and ?usefulness? toward the technology assists nursing assessment system. Results: The results showed the assessment system is ease system to use and usefulness in their job. It significant relationships of the perceived ?ease of use? and ?usefulness? with nurses? behavioral intension on the nursing care plan decision support system. Conclusion: The successful development of the decision support system was based on the following points: (1) Existing knowledge of nursing assessments and standard care planning were fully used; (2) Wireless PDA was introduced to enable simple and quick recording of bedside findings; and (3) Registered data were optimally reused upon summarization and readmission to reduce the nurses? workloads.
