Objective: This research was conducted to compare quality of life of Coronary artery disease patients between before and after CABG. Design: This study was prospective descriptive research. Population, sample, setting, year: The sample were 40 CAD patients underwent CABG surgery. The participants were obtained from general unit of three university hospitals and then followed up at out-patient department. The data was collected from March to September 2001. Concepts: Berger's conceptual was used to determine the quality of life by measured the change of functional status in three dimensions; 1) physical 2) psychosocial 3) independent. A higher score indicated lower quality of life. Method: The sample were purposive sampling . The data was collected by structured interview. Description data was reported by descriptive statistic, paired t-test was used to compare the quality of life of CAD patients between before and after the surgery. Finding: Most were male, married, mean age = 61.7years, had three risk factors ; hyperlipidemia, hypertension, lack of exercise. Mean score of quality of life in three dimension were 1) physical = 26.09, 2) psychosocial = 31.93 , 3) independent = 39.46 whereas after the surgery were 11.95, 12.15, and 24.42. When compare mean score between before and after surgery was significant difference (p<.005). Conclusion: Most were male, elderly, and had three risk factors with three vessels disease. The prevalent risk factors were hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and lack of exercise. The coronary artery disease risk in a person with three risk factor is higher than person with one risk. According to the functional status showed that the qol of CAD patients after the surgery was better than before. Implication: Risk factors should be included in modification life style program. . This study suggested the importance of care plan to promote self care practice and long term follow up.
