Problem Statement: During the last decade changes in health care have affected more and more people. The focus of health care has shifted to primary care and community care. However in everyday nursing, changes were too slow in the direction of family and community. The statistics show e.g. in case of the increase of cardiovascular patients that the environment, the patient’s community cannot influence the patients health in a positive way. The care for this patient group, enhancing their co-operational skills, strengthening the family as a primary source are all challenges for the nurses. In Hungary, we know little about how much patient’s relatives know about caring and the given illness and about their needs. We need this information if we want to have an equal relationship with then and if we want to involve them in the process of the patient’s recovery. Aims of Study: To explore how much relatives know about the prevention of the given illness, about the health status of the patient, about the tasks he/she undertakes in the caring situation. To know how the illness influenced the family, their quality of life. To explore what role, possibilities a nurse has in health promotion. Method: We compiled a three part questionnaire for relatives of cardiovascular patients, the first part of which explored general sociological data about the sample, the second part explored the relative’s knowledge about the patient’s treatment and nursing, the third part tried to explore the relative’s health image. Sample: Relatives of cardiovascular patients (n=600). Results: It was possible to explore the knowledge, the needs and attitudes of the relatives of cardiovascular patients in relationship with the onset of the illness, the problems, nursing tasks in the process of the illness. Conclusion: With the help of the results of the study more adequate nursing can be established in the family. Refreshment courses can be offered to practice nurses according to the explored needs. The experiences of the study can be used in nurse training to widen students’ knowledge.
