[Research Paper or Poster Presentation] The purpose of this study is to apply contract learning and catechetical instruction on a remedial instruction with a group of 5-year diploma nursing students who failed the subject "Physical Examination and Assessment". Guided by action research, this study presented a feasible approach of teaching and learning and teacher-student interaction from traditional nursing education. The process and outcomes of the study were examined by a structured self-evaluation questionnaire, teachers' reflection notes through the process, and the results of the subject. The study process revealed positive outcomes in teacher-student interaction, and the students were able to learn more actively, take their own learning responsibilities, and provide their learning feedback appropriately. Besides, the students gained apparently better results of the subject. This action research provided a model experience for similar teaching and learning context of remedial nursing instruction.
